Ontario to Employers: Take 7 Steps to Comply with Privacy Laws

Just having a written privacy policy isn’t enough; employers need to establish a privacy culture. So concludes the Ontario Privacy Commissioner in its Sept. 5, 2012 guidance, which lists 7 things organizations must do to comply with workplace privacy laws:

  • Implement written privacy policy based on privacy impact assessment
  • Link each requirement of the policy to a concrete, actionable item
  • Demonstrate how each item will be implemented
  • Conduct privacy education and awareness training
  • Designate central “go to” person to field privacy questions
  • Verify that privacy policies and procedures are actually carried out
  • Establish procedures for responding to breaches.
