I am wondering if there is any government provision i.e. EI or other given to employees who have to take compassionate leave to care for a family member?
No. As in just about all jurisdictions, compassionate care leave under the BC Employment Standards Act is unpaid. Of course, employers can always provide more generous benefits if they choose or via negotiation of a collective agreement covering union employees. Here’s some BC Govt guidance that may help: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/employment-business/employment-standards-advice/employment-standards/forms-resources/igm/esa-part-6-section-52-1
