New Laws

Feb 23: February 23 is the deadline to apply for Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program funding for farming initiatives to promote beneficial land use and environmental resiliency of farms. Such initiatives include maintaining and providing healthy soil and water resources, enhancing wildlife habitat and biodiversity and adapting to climate change.

New Laws

Dec 22: NL Hydro and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited agreed to a short-term deal providing for the purchase of up to 140,000 megawatt hours of power at $187 per megawatt hour. The agreement, which will remain in place until June 30, will furnish additional capacity for NL Hydro at a lower cost than the $275 per megawatt hour provided under the previous agreement, which had been in place since 2024.

Health & Safety

Jan 2: WorkplaceNL published a new poster for employers to upload and post in the workplace calling out the 3 basic OHS rights of workers in Canada, that is, the right to: i. know of potential workplace hazards; ii. participate in keeping their workplace safe; and iii. refuse dangerous work.

Workers’ Compensation

Feb 28: That’s the deadline for Newfoundland and Labrador employers to submit their Annual Employer Statements to WorkplaceNL, including their: i. Employer Payroll Statement listing their actual payroll data for 2025; ii. Occupational Health and Safety Statement; and iii. Employer Contractor Statement.

Action Point: Look up the 2026 workers’ compensation premium rates in each part of Canada.
