Unpaid Leave to Deal with Critically Ill or Missing Children
ESA laws already grant employees unpaid leave to deal with family and medical emergencies. But last year (2012), the federal government created a new leave for employees to care for loved ones or deal with a lost child. So far in 2013, three provinces—Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia—have followed the federal lead and proposed adding critically ill or missing child care leave to their own ESA laws. Although there are slight differences by province, each of the bills would provide:
- Up to 8 weeks of family caregiver leave to care for family members with serious medical conditions
- Up to 37 weeks to care for a critically ill child
- Up to 52 weeks to deal with a missing child
- Up to 104 weeks if a child dies as a result of a crime.
