Noise Protection Rules

July 1: That’s the date that the new noise protection rules take effect. The new rules, Regulation 381/15: Noise, which the MOL officially approved in December, consolidate the previously separate noise protection requirements for Industrial Establishments, Mines, Oil and Gas-Offshore and Farming Operations into a single OHS regulation, takes effect. Highlights:

  • Maximum noise exposure limit of 85 decibels time-weighted over an 8-hour shift
  • Employers must use “hierarchy of controls” including engineering controls, work practices and hearing protection devices to cut worker exposure
  • Employers must provide adequate instruction and training on hearing protection devices provided.
