Feb 28: The GN announced that it’s increasing the residency allowance for Nunavut employees from $400 to $1,000 per month, starting April 1. This is the first increase in the monthly residency allowance since 2008.

New Laws

Feb 27: The GN tabled what it described as a “comfortable” $2.1 billion budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The Department of Health will receive nearly a quarter of the territory’s budget, an increase of $40 million over last year. The budget earmarks $157 million for community infrastructure, including a new wastewater plant in Kinngait.

Health & Safety

Feb 23: The Department of Health advised of the increased risk of influenza B and other viral respiratory illnesses currently circulating in Nunavut. The agency called on residents over 6 months in age to get the influenza and COVID-19 vaccines.
