Treatment of Pregnant Employees Policy

Women employees have the right to be treated with equality, dignity, respect and accommodation of their needs while they are pregnant, attempting to become pregnant, and returning to work from a pregnancy-related absence.

Pregnancy-related discrimination is prohibited under the Canadian Human Rights Act, and employers have a legal obligation to reasonably accommodate pregnancy-related needs.

Having a clear, fair and effective policy for the treatment of pregnant employees helps foster a respectful, inclusive human rights culture in the workplace and improves employee health and morale.

This Model Policy is based on information from the Canadian Human Rights Commission templates drafted for the Law Society of BC.

HR managers in any part of the country may adapt this Model Policy for use at their own workplace.
