May 15: Comments ended on a proposal to make harassment prevention an OHS duty and require employers to implement a written harassment prevention policy that includes:
- A statement that every worker is entitled to work free of harassment
- The employer’s stated commitment to ensure a harassment-free workplace and investigate harassment complaints
- Complaint and investigation procedures
- Assurances against reprisals for making complaints.
May 4: A bill making post-traumatic stress and other trauma- and stressor-related disorders a condition covered by workers’ comp is now in Committee. But while it may sound formidable, Bill 2 is actually a paper tiger considering that the disorder must be “an acute reaction to a traumatic event” even though medical studies clearly show that these disorders are generally not traumatic but develop gradually and cumulatively over time.
April 17: PEI is rolling out a new program offering 6-month internships to post-secondary graduates in engineering, computer-aided design and drafting, construction technology and policy planning. To qualify, the graduate must have earned the degree within the last 2 years.
May 9: Medicare will now cover gender-altering or confirming surgeries if they’re medically necessary for a transgendered individual. Coverage rules will be similar to the ones that apply to these procedures in most other provinces.
