Feb. 5: At 5.4%, Saskatchewan’s current seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is below the national average of 5.9% and tied with Québec for second lowest among all provinces. Although the labour force fell 5% year over year, total jobs are up 1,500, including the addition of 4,900 full-time positions. Sectors with the most growth include hospitality (+2,300 jobs), public administration (+2,000) and building and support services (+1,700).
Apr. 1: The big cuts in generic drug prices taking effect today are expected to save Sask. employers at least $50 million over the next 5 years. The 25% to 40% price cuts, which apply to nearly 70 commonly prescribed generic drugs including those for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression, are part of a national initiative developed by the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association and pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance.
