Distracted Driving Policy

WorkSafe BC has contributed this great model policy that you can use and adapt for your workplace.

Operating a motor vehicle requires a driver’s full attention. Twenty-five per cent of all vehicle crashes that occur annually in B.C. can be attributed to drivers being distracted. Wireless electronic devices such as cell phones are the number one cause of these distractions. Research shows that the risk of injury and property damage increases fourfold for drivers who use their cell phones while on the road. These drivers fail to observe critically important information — they look but they don’t see.

This guidance document aims to assist employers to develop a company policy on distracted driving and to increase awareness of the risks. Employers are responsible for conducting risk assessments and developing safety policies and procedures specific to their operations and circumstances.
