On April 12, 2012, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) released the first edition of its ergonomics standard, CSA Z1004, Workplace ergonomics – A Management and Implementation Standard.
Impact On You: The CSA is a non-government organization and its standards are voluntary. But most provinces incorporate CSA standards into their OHS laws; in addition, courts and arbitrators often rely on CSA and other voluntary standards as unofficial benchmarks defining what employers are expected to do to protect employees from certain risks. Bottom Line: Employers can actually be found liable for not following CSA standards—even though they’re purportedly voluntary.
