Paying Sikh Courier Less Isn’t Religious Discrimination

A Sikh driver claimed that his courier company paid him less than other drivers because of his religion. The company claimed that its pay rate decisions were based on driving experience and difficulty of the route and denied even knowing what religion each driver practiced. A human rights tribunal found no evidence of religious discrimination and threw out the complaint [Walia v. Barca Enterprise and Dion, 2009 BCHRT 70 (CanLII), Feb. 19, 2009].
