Employee Who Signs Severance Release Can’t Sue for Discrimination

An employee signed a release in exchange for 6 months’ severance. He later claimed he was forced to sign the release and sued for discrimination. The Human Rights Tribunal threw out the case. There was no evidence that the employee signed the release under duress. He was an experienced business man and admitted to understanding the agreement. And the 11 days he was given to sign was plenty of time [Lawrence v. TR Controls Inc., [2011] O.H.R.T.D. No. 222, Feb. 1, 2011].
